Is Pet insurance right for you?

Central Hospital For Veterinary Medicine believes that pet insurance is an excellent option and can greatly enhance the care you provide your beloved companion.  It has become increasingly popular. Having pet insurance can eliminate some of the stress that comes with needing to make a decision about your pet’s care by limiting the financial impact it may have on your family’s budget.  Currently, all pet insurance plans are general reimbursement plans meaning you pay the hospital bill and the insurance company reimburses you once the claim is filed. WHY?

Veterinary care, like human health care, has a cost. Veterinary medicine, although very similar to human medicine in its highly educated medical staff and state-of-the-art medical equipment, does not have the same insurance umbrella that human medicine benefits from. Pet insurance has gained great awareness over the past 15 years triggering more insurance companies to offer pet insurance and new companies being created. This increase and ease of accessing pet insurance keeps monthly premiums low and competitive for us, the consumer.

WHEN?

Sooner rather than later, but there is no age limit. Even senior pets can have an insurance policy. Some preexisting conditions your pet has experienced may not be covered, but there are accidents and illnesses that you may experience as your pet ages that you will want covered. 

TRUE OR FALSE?

Pet insurance for older pets costs more than human health insurance.

FALSE! Although insurance plans for adult and senior pets are slightly higher than young pets, the difference in monthly fees can range from $20-$40, making your monthly premium about $40-$100 (based on the company you choose).

Do your research and ask family and friends for recommendations. Most pet insurance companies will give you a quick, free quote based on your pet’s breed, age, where you live, etc. There are so many options for coverage (wellness vs. accident/illness), deductibles (as low as $100), and monthly premiums (ranging from $25-50 a month.)
