Founded in 1975 by a group of dedicated, local veterinarians, Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine was established to enhance veterinary practice through the centralization of staff, equipment, facilities, and ideas. Specializing in small-animal care, our primary focus is on cats and dogs.As of 2026, more than 300 veterinarians refer their patients to us each year for emergency and specialty care. Their trust allows us to deliver the highest standard of veterinary care around the clock, every day of the year.
Our Two Locations
We provide 24/7 Emergency care and board-certified specialty services at both our North Haven and Guilford locations allowing us to serve an even larger community. Rain, snow, sleet, we are here 365 days a year including all holidays.
Our Team
Our in-house staff includes over 260 dedicated individuals. Our 30 doctors are supported by a diverse team of highly skilled Veterinary Technician Specialists (VTS), Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT, RVT, LVT), technicians, assistants, scrub nurses, client care coordinators, and administrators. Meet our doctors here.
We share all records related to the care your pet receives with your family veterinarian. Your primary care veterinarian is notified whenever your pet is hospitalized or visits our hospital, and they can easily access your petโs records through our online system. This supports seamless, collaborative wellness and specialty care. We partner closely with your primary care veterinary team, working together to provide your pet with the best possible health care.

“I’ve been here a few times over the years & the experience has always been top notch despite the stressful reasons I was there. My recent experience had me in happy tears as I was leaving. I can’t express how grateful I am with how we were treated.”
“We are always treated with kindness and compassion at Central, regardless of their department we are visiting; staff has always gone above and beyond in terms of sharing knowledge, as well as to treat us with compassion while remaining professional”
“I went with my cat who had not eaten for 24 hours and wasn’t acting like himself. I didn’t think it would be critical. It was a twisted liver lobe, though. They IDed the issue fast, stabilized him, and found a board-certified surgeon which saved him”
“I have been using [Central Hospital] consistently since 1995 with 6 dogs. They have always been the best medical care but I can say confidently that they are even better than before. I highly recommend them!”

The mural in our conference room is 25 feet long and 5 feet 10 inches high, and was painted with oil colors on canvas in Florida. It was then flown to Connecticut and mounted on the plaster wall specially designed for the mural when New Haven Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine was built in 1974. The artist, Ernest Hart, is the father of one of our founding veterinarians, Allan Hart. The mural has become an iconic image for the hospital. For a period of time, the New Haven Historical Society featured the mural in small exhibit as an iconic New Haven image. We are proud of our mural and we brought it with us to our new location in North Haven where it occupies the main wall of the conference room.
