We’re excited to welcome Dr. Lauren Green to our Neurology team. To help our community get to know her better, we sat down with Dr. Green to talk about her background, her passions in veterinary neurology, and what she’s looking forward to as she joins Central Hospital.
Can you share a little about your educational path?
I graduated from UConn with a degree in Physiology and Neurobiology. It was there that my interest in neurology began and I even worked in a behavioral neuroscience research lab. After graduation, I worked at Harvard as a laboratory manager before going to Tufts for my DVM. I completed my rotating internship at The Ohio State University followed by a residency in neurology and neurosurgery at NC State University.
What inspired you to pursue veterinary medicine, and specifically neurology?
I’ve always had a strong connection to animals and knew I wanted to pursue veterinary medicine from a young age. Growing up, my own cat had seizures and I remember how scary it was to watch them. I think that this experience coupled with my interest in neurobiology from undergrad led me to become a veterinary neurologist. It gave me a personal understanding of the fear and uncertainty families face when their pet develops a neurologic condition. Neurology also involves the medical and surgical management of various diseases, so each day as a neurologist can look very different!
What areas of neurology are you most passionate about?
One of the most important aspects of my job is client education. It is an essential part of managing neurologic conditions because these diseases are often chronic and complex. So much of my patients’ care happens at home and teaching owners about the diseases and treatments empowers them to play an active role in their pet’s therapy.
What do you find most rewarding about helping pets with neurological conditions?
Seeing a dog start to walk again after back surgery is one of the most rewarding things as a veterinary neurologist.
What excites you the most about joining Central? How does it feel to be working alongside Dr. Philip Cohen?
I am excited to be joining Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine for numerous reasons, but particularly that there are many specialities available. There is a collaborative environment allowing for delivery of the best possible care to patients. Complex cases can be approached from different perspectives and each specialist may provide valuable insight on how to improve patient treatment and outcome.
Veterinary neurology is often challenging and some diseases may not have straightforward solutions. It’ll be great to work alongside Dr. Cohen to learn how he approaches things and discuss cases together. I’m excited for the learning opportunity!
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
My husband and I had a baby last year, so much of my time is spent chasing after her as she learns to explore the world around her.
Tell us a little about your own pet.
We have one cat, a silver tabby named Pickle, that I rescued in my 4th year of vet school. He’s still adjusting to life with a tiny human that thinks his tail is a toy.
