How to administer eye drops and eye ointment

In the month of May, the ACVO sponsors FREE eye screenings for service animals by a board certified ophthalmologist. We are eager to participate again this year!

Below are two videos provided by the ACVO event: How to Administer Eye Drops, and How to Administer Eye Ointment.

ACVO Service Animal Eye Screenings: A Vision of Care

Each May, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) hosts a remarkable event—the Service Animal Volunteer Eye Screening. This philanthropic initiative provides free ocular screening exams to qualified service and working animals, ensuring their vision remains sharp for the vital roles they play in our communities.

Why It Matters

Service animals—from guide dogs to search-and-rescue heroes—rely on their eyesight to perform their duties effectively. These screenings help detect early signs of eye disease, allowing for timely intervention and continued care.

Who Can Participate?

The program is open to formally trained service and working animals, including those assisting with hearing, mobility, police work, and therapy. Registration occurs annually from April 1st to April 30th, with exams taking place throughout May.

A Collective Effort

This initiative thrives thanks to volunteer veterinary ophthalmologists, generous sponsors, and dedicated organizations that support service animals. With approximately 8,000 exams conducted worldwide, the program underscores the importance of proactive eye care.
