CASE STUDY- Anesthetic Case Management of a Guinea Pig

Undergoing Femoral Fracture Repair

This publication was written by our very own James W. Mackey, BS, CVT, VTS (Anesthesia & Analgesia) for the NAVTA Journal. Below is a short excerpt from the publication.

A History

A 14 week old female intact guinea pig presented to a private veterinary referral hospital for left hindlimb lameness. Vital signs on presentation were: body weight 0.5 kilograms, temperature (temp) 102.3F, heart rate (HR) 240 beats per minute (bpm), and respiratory rate (RR) 50 breaths per minute (brpm). Physical examination confirmed left hindlimb pain but identified no other abnormalities. Orthopedic radiographs revealed a closed mid-diaphyseal short oblique fracture of the left femur with moderate caudomedial displacement.Treatment options were discussed and the owner elected to pursue surgical repair. The patient was prescribed meloxicam 0.3 mg/kg SC SID and buprenorphine 0.05 mg/kg SC TID for pain. Surgery was scheduled for the following day (Figure 1).
